If you get cold called by these guys asking if you would like to sell your business; do not do anything until you have googled their name and read the damning evidence against them.

They have to be one of the worst leech companies ever and you would be crazy to even entertain them in your house let alone over the phone.

Each year in the 2nd week of August pretty much everyone in the UK Fireworks Industry travels down to Plymouth to watch this competition. It is held over two nights (Tuesday & Wednesday) with three fireworks displays each evening. If you want to visit I advise you to get there early. With 100,000 people watching each night, the city soon becomes gridlocked. The six teams are drawn from a selection of Fireworks companies from all over the UK.

The competition for 2015 was between these six companies (in firing order).

  • Tuesday 18th August
    • Phoenix Fireworks
    • Spyrotechnics
    • Essex Pyrotechnics
  • Wednesday 19th August
    • Fantastic Fireworks
    • Gala Fireworks
    • 1st Galaxy Fireworks

Recently I have been seeing quite a few laptops arriving in the office with their NICs set to strange DNS entries. It appears that some home broadband routers are able to overwrite the DNS setting for a NIC and apply some strange IP range. The below script when applied in GPO will reset the DNS back to “obtain DNS server address automatically”. Continue reading »

Posts on my blog have been few and far between. What’s worse, is that I have not produced anything related to Pyrotechnics.  It will happen, just as soon as I find something that I really want to share with you all.

Meanwhile, I came across this website earlier in the week and feel that this is something worth sharing with you all: www.fiverr.com

This is a simple concept of selling a skill or product to people around the world yet unlike craigslist or gumtree or even ebay, the skill tends to be more from a creative background and must be priced at $5. As a test I have comissioned a member of fiverr to design me a logo for this blog and a second member to design me a wedding flyer for my fireworks display company.

Lets see how they compare. Delivery is due later this month for the logo and early January for the flyer. Although it’s a test, I intend to use both products so the wedding flyer will grace my stand at wedding faires. I’m hoping that the logo will also become an avatar for my many forum accounts.

It doesn’t have to stop at $5 though.  If you like the results then you can pay a bit extra for the source file or more for additional services. Think of it as a place to show off your talents to prospective customers who might be looking to commission a larger project with serious money.  Some of the members are very talented based on their portfolios.

Did I mention that I ramble a lot?

We own a Vax vacuum cleaner.  It’s one of the new designs that uses those multiple vortices (cyclones?) to separate the dirt from the air.  A brilliant invention from Mr James Dyson himself that now seems to be licensed by other vacuum cleaner companies. Continue reading »

So this is the first post then.

What shall we say?

I know…

This website is hosted at Xilo Communications in the UK. I picked them after spending ten years renting a hosted server with One & One.  Suffice to say that IMHO Xilo are miles better than One & One.

It’s not that 1&1 were really bad but the management of your contract in Xilo is sooo much easier to navigate and in particular, domain administration is a breeze.  Plus I was able to reduce my hosting bill by a factor of three.

Finally, I am supporting a UK company with a UK datacentre unlike 1&1 where all the support was overseas and the datacentre was “who knows where?”.
